Since we are a peanut-free classroom, we wanted to help parents with ideas for daily snacks. We also recommend that you consider non-food items for parties/holidays.
Below you will find how to read labels to identify nut-free packaged products. Also you will find a list of items that some parents discovered along the way:
***Due to continual changes in manufacturing packaging and processing, please read ingredient labels of your snack chosen from this list to ensure that it does not “contain”, “may contain”, or was “manufactured in a facility that also processes” peanuts or tree nuts. ***
WHERE TO LOOK
1) Ingredient list
2) Allergen Statement, May Contain or Contains statement.
Usually right under ingredient list.
3) Scan the rest of the packaging.
Occasionally allergy info. is NOT under ingredient list OR is ALSO
elsewhere on the packaging.
“processed in a shared facility with…”,
“made with shared equipment with…”,
made in the same area as…”,
or “may contain traces of..”
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The words:
1) peanut(s)
2) tree nut(s), means any other type of nut, see 3 below
3) Any specific nut by name, all have the word “nut” in the name except for those at the end

EXCEPTIONS
1) Coconut, water chestnuts, butternut squash, and nutmeg, hickory smoke flavor, soybean
(it’s a bean not a nut), various seeds (seseme, sunflower) are safe.
2) Package says “peanut free” or “nut free”

SOME of the Maplehurst brand cupcakes (found at most TOPS) are peanut free cupcakes. The peanut free cupcakes will be clearly labeled as such, i.e., a picture on the front of the package of a peanut with a red circle and diagonal line. BJs also has had peanut free cupcakes in the past.
