Organization
Use of Introductions, Transitions, and Closing Paragraphs; Appropriate spacing, indenting, and use of bullets
Short Responses: Include Restating (R), Details/Examples (E) from the text, and insightful ideas (I);

Sentence Fluency
Includes all necessary words; doesn’t use too many words or repeated phrases

Word Choice
Evidence of precise nouns,  lively verbs, adjectives, and adverbs

Voice
Writer speaks directly to the reader in a compelling way; Use of natural and engaging language; narrative writing is personal and engaging which demonstrates writer’s personal opinion or point of view; Insightful thoughts and opinions.

Spelling/Grammar
Students identify words spelled incorrectly and use strategies to look up words; appropriate use of grammar, capital letters, and punctuation.

Presentation
Use of appropriate heading on paper; writing is legible and easy to read; uses lines and margins appropriately; student took time to publish and enhance writing



READING RESPONSES: REI means students restated, gave details and examples from the story, and connected the examples with their own ideas.

COMPARISON ESSAYS: Ideas, Organization, and Sentence Fluency is assessed. Students learn how to compare two selections using specific examples from each selection. They will learn how to write a comparison paragraph which references each selection title with specific examples and details from the story. and making same sentence comparisons when necessary. Use of proper transitions should be evident. Students will practice restating with a topic sentence and how to make a strong closing sentence as well.

WRITING PROCESS PIECES: Students will practice writing Narratives, Opinion Essays, Comparison Essays, and Research Papers. The will practice planning/outlines, developing ideas in a rough Draft, self-editing strategies, and using technology to publish writing pieces.
